Peer Review Process

Feature Articles submitted for publication to Dancecult are to be subjected to double-blind peer review by international researchers. See Author Guidelines.

Publication Frequency

Dancecult is published once a year.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Dancecult is a member of the Radical Open Access Collective.

Dancecult Style Guide

Before submitting, all authors must download and read the Dancecult Style Guide (aka "the DSG").

Dancecult announcements & discussion list

Foreign Language Translations

Dancecult's Transpositions section publishes English-language translations of already-published, foreign-language EDMC scholarship. Articles are selected by the Foreign Language Editor in consultation with the Executive Editor. Authors may nominate their own already-published work for Transpositions by contacting the FLE.

For authors wishing to translate their manuscripts into English, the Foreign Languages Editor (FLE) can provide help in finding a capable professional translator. The cost of translation remains with the author.

Once an article has been accepted for publication, the FLE is available to provide limited editing and proofreading support. Non-Anglophone authors may seek assistance from the FLE during the editing process.

Submission Policy

Dancecult publishes original material. Note, we do not re-publish papers in conference proceedings. Submissions not complying with the above will be rejected.

Dancecult does not feature article processing or submission charges.

Guest Edition Submission Procedure

As a peer review open access journal fully indexed by Scopus that publishes a range of content in PDF/html formats, Dancecult is the flagship journal of electronic music and dance culture. In 2025 we will publish our 22nd issue (guest edited by Anita Jóri and titled "EDM and its Discontents"). We publish once a year (in mid-Nov) and we have a long history of publishing guest edited issues. Past topics include DJs, production technologies and studio practice, Afrofuturism, dub, psytrance, Love Parade, nightlife and fieldwork, festivals, algorithmic EDM, women, the impact of Covid, psychedelics and space.

If you’re interested in publishing a guest edited issue on a relevant theme please contact Executive Editor Graham St John with an expression of interest at your earliest convenience. We plan to publish guest edited issues in Nov 2027, 2028 and 2029. The deadline for submitting a proposed CFP for a guest edited issue to be published on these dates is 1 March 2026, after which your proposal will be evaluated by the Dancecult Editorial Board (decisions announced in March 2026).

For further guidelines, previous CFPs have been posted on the Announcements page. CFPs must include biographies of all guest editors. Prospective guest editors should keep in mind Dancecult’s commitment to publish content across various sections: not only Feature Articles, but content in the From the Floor html section, as well as reviews, translations and conversations. Prospective guest editors are encouraged to propose a creative strategy for FTF appropriate to the theme and which takes advantage of the section’s media rich possibilities.
