Focus and Scope

Dancecult is a peer-reviewed, open-access e-journal for the study of electronic dance music culture (EDMC). A platform for interdisciplinary scholarship on the shifting terrain of EDMCs worldwide, the journal houses research exploring the sites, technologies, sounds and cultures of electronic music in historical and contemporary perspectives. Playing host to studies of emergent forms of electronic music production, performance, distribution, and reception, as a portal for cutting-edge research on the relation between bodies, technologies, and cyberspace, as a medium through which the cultural politics of dance is critically investigated, and as a venue for innovative multimedia projects, Dancecult is the forum for research on EDMCs.

From dancehall to raving, club cultures to sound systems, disco to techno, breakbeat to psytrance, hip hop to dubstep, IDM to noisecore, nortec to bloghouse, global EDMCs are a shifting spectrum of scenes, genres, and aesthetics. What is the role of ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, religion and spirituality in these formations? How have technologies, mind alterants, and popular culture conditioned this proliferation, and how has electronic music filtered into cinema, literature and everyday life? How does existing critical theory enable understanding of EDMCs, and how might the latter challenge the assumptions of our inherited heuristics? What is the role of the DJ in diverse genres, scenes, subcultures, and/or neotribes? As the journal of the international EDMC research network, Dancecult welcomes submissions from scholars addressing these and related inquiries across all disciplines.

 

Peer Review Process

Feature Articles submitted for publication to Dancecult are to be subjected to double-blind peer review by two international researchers. Although an attempt is made to complete the peer-review process within six weeks, in some cases it may take longer.

 

Publication Frequency

Dancecult is published once a year.

 

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Foreign Language Translations

Dancecult's Transpositions section publishes English-language translations of already-published, foreign-language EDMC scholarship. Articles are selected by the Foreign Language Editor in consultation with the Executive Editor. Authors may nominate their own already-published work for Transpositions by contacting the FLE.

For authors wishing to translate their manuscripts into English, the Foreign Languages Editor (FLE) can provide help in finding a capable professional translator. The cost of translation remains with the author.

Once an article has been accepted for publication, the FLE is available to provide limited editing and proofreading support. Non-Anglophone authors may seek assistance from the FLE during the editing process.

 

 

Dancecult thanks...

Ed Montano passed away on February 4, 2018. While we knew he had been battling cancer for 18 months, the news was a shock to us all. Ed was quite simply one of the good ones. He worked behind the scenes, put untold hours into the research community, and without a fuss. His dedication to Dancecult in various roles over almost a decade is legendary, not only for his professional attitude but because it expressed a noble service to the community, which was in many ways incomparable, as reflected in his capacity as Review Editor over seven years, but also as Operations Director, and before that Production Editor. As anyone who's volunteered to perform editorial duties like these for year after year knows, the only genuine reward in their performance is the joy of contributing to something greater than your self. Ed was instrumental in the formation of EDMC studies, not only through his dedication to these efforts by also for his research on festivals. Still young, he had so much more to offer. He also gave a lot of his time to IASPM and journal. The community really faces a tragic loss. This is a sad period for Ed’s wife Jo and kids, and also sad for Dancecult. There had been discussions over some years about a Dancecult conference at RMIT, where Ed worked, an idea that had to be shelved due to his illness. With news of what we thought was a recovery, he was still talking about the possibility of a conference at RMIT. So long Ed, we’ll be seeing you in the great conference afterparty at the end of time.

 

tobias c. van Veen, Dancecult's Managing Editor, who between 2010-2012, undertook the epic task of revisioning journal appearance, and who redesigned the logo, formed an efficient production team, oversaw a server transfer, acted as OJS frontman, overhauled the Dancecult Style Guide, and produced the HTML Production Guide, the InDesign Production Guide, and the Publishing Guide from scratch.

Data Privacy Notice

Dancecult is an activity of the Dancecult Research Network, which is an unincorporated education and research organisation registered in Australia.

- To enable us to provide the Dancecult-l mailing list and the Dancecult Research Network resource list service.

- Explicit consent of the data subject so that we can send you the Dancecult-l mailing list emails, provide the Dancecult Research Network resource list service and keep you informed about news, events, activities and services.

We will only keep your personal data for as long as it is necessary for the purpose for which it was collected and until removal or erasure is requested.

Unless subject to an exemption under the GDPR, you have the following rights with respect to your personal data: 

- The right to request a copy of your personal data which Dancecult Research Network holds about you;

- The right to request that Dancecult Research Network corrects any personal data if it is found to be inaccurate or out of date;

- The right to request your personal data is erased where it is no longer necessary for Dancecult Research Network to retain such data;

- The right to withdraw your consent to the processing at any time;

- The right to request that the data controller provide the data subject with his/her personal data and where possible, to transmit that data directly to another data controller, (known as the right to data portability);

- The right, where there is a dispute in relation to the accuracy or processing of your personal data, to request a restriction is placed on further processing;

- The right to object to the processing of personal data;

- The right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

If we wish to use your personal data for a new purpose, not covered by this Data Protection Notice, then we will provide you with a new notice explaining this new use prior to commencing the processing and setting out the relevant purposes and processing conditions. Where and whenever necessary, we will seek your prior consent to the new processing.

11. Cookies

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
